Oregon RPG/Game Stores - Updated 06/23/2013

We find that a lot of gaming stores don't always advertise as efficiently as possible. Frustratingly, most that do utilize the Yellow Pages or similar methods. Yellow Pages ad rates are such that a lot of businesses will buy a multi-year run of the ad, which means that, in any given phone book, a number of such ads will be for shops that are out of business.

As such, we're trying to keep an up-to-date list of shops that have been verified as still in business at time of posting. We love discovering new shops, so as we wander the state, we hope to expand this list.

Note: We're personally primarily focused on cataloguing places selling RPG stuff, but we are listing stores any genre-related stores that sell games. If a comic shop doesn't fall into this category, we're not currently listing it. We may do a list of comic shops at some point in the near future.

Sister store to Matt's Cavalcade of Comics. Opened in late 2012. A fantastic addition to Albany, but quite a bit off the beaten path. Albany finally has a full-service game store again!

They advertise that they sell RPGs, and are a WotC Premier store (or "Wizards Play Network" / WPN, whatever stupid name WotC is using these days), but we didn't see a single RPG book in the store. Tiny, has a couple of tables in the middle of the floor for CCG playing. Store looks like the owner put his old toy collection on display, and became a Wizards retailer to sell Magic.

Matt's rocks. It's really the only full-service comic/games store around the area the commercial property types like to call the "local trade area" (Albany/Lebanon/Corvallis and the surrounding communities). Matt's has moved a few times in the last decade or two, but currently resides on Buchanan & Kings, opposite Fred Meyer. Matt's probably has the deepest selection of new comics and backstock north of Eugene, and is probably on par with the shops down there. Past the requisite comics, CCG, the store stocks most of the current "big" RPG games and has just gotten into Warhammer. There's a moderate selection of backstock and used RPG stuff, but it's not a horribly great selection, and it's not priced to move. Tons of dice, usually some minis (though we don't believe they're actively stocking Reaper minis anymore) and paints. The only real "issue" with Matt's is that it's a bit disorganized because there's so much stuff. Matt's is a comic shop first and foremost, and as such, much of the floorspace is taken up with 2'x6' folding tables holding tons of longboxes. There is a play area in the back of the store, and they host Magic events and Pathfinder Society games. LOTS of boutique boardgames. If you're shopping local, shop here first.

Clique-shop. What's a clique-shop? It's a vanity store opened by someone who wants to run a game store, and it becomes the hangout for the owner's clique of friends. They sell some Magic: The Gathering and some Warhammer 40K stuff, but the only RPG stuff appears to be a token D&D 4E book or two. Tiny shop, barely any room to walk around, especially if the clique is in residence. Matt's is a better place to spend your money, and there's far less neckbeards.

Trump's has been around forever, and still sells a reasonable selection of board games and CCGs. There's some NOS RPG stuff collecting dust in the back, but nothing new. Trump's primary focus is traditional hobbies, but, they do sell some gaming stuff, hence their inclusion.

Pretty much just a CCG shop these days, and will likely be removed from this list after a confirming visit the next time we're in Eugene. Used to have a decent selection of RPG stuff, but that seems to be being phased out over time. The website has a "D&D Books" section that's completely empty, and is likely an artifact of a past time when they were a real game shop. Ironically, the only store listed on WotC's store locator for D&D stuff in Eugene.

Update:

So, they still sell a token amount of RPG stuff, but it's definitely not their main focus. We'll leave them here for the time being, but if you're looking for ANY breadth of selection, look elsewhere.

Primarily a comics shop, it's also got a LOT of anime. There's a couple shelves of RPG stuff, new and used. The requisite Magic: the Gathering is sold here, as well as whatever is current/popular in the genre (Clix and what not). Shares the building with, and is directly across from , Smith Family Bookstore's Campus location.

We'd call this a "full-featured" game store. They've carry a lot of the new RPG stuff (including indie stuff), tons of board games (mainstream and boutique, but more boutique), M:tG and other CCGs, and Warhammer 40K, with a huge playspace dedicated to the 40K folks. They'll occasionally have some used RPG stuff, but it's not a focus of the store, by any means. Probably the best game store in Eugene.

While advertised as a WotC Premier/WPN store, there's no RPG stuff here. It's pretty much just a Magic: The Gathering sales and playspace. We know nothing of this store, having just discovered it online within the last few months. It's on our list of places to visit the next time we get over to Independence/Monmouth, or happen to be passing through when they're open.

Update:

Visited a few months ago, looked to be one of the increasingly typical shoestring-budget-heartbreaker-stores (i.e. "we pooled a few months rent together, and bought a couple thousand bucks worth of stock" kinda places that pop up reasonably frequently, then quickly fade away. A follow-up visit will be final confirmation, but they appeared to be out of business when I was in Monmouth a couple weeks ago.

Ancient Wonders is a long-time Portland-area fixture, likely one of the oldest stores on this list. It's the epitome of the cliched old-school game store, operating out of run-down converted house smack-dab in the middle of a much more recently developed area, and has somehow avoided displacement due to the resulting gentrification. This store is likely your best bet for finding old/used/out-of-print material in the entire state (possibly including all surrounding states). If we had to choose one store our of this list as our favorite, Ancient Wonders would be that store. Sadly, however, it may not remain such for long. The store does still stock current games, cards and comics, but things seem to be on a decline. The new stock isn't nearly as deep as it once was, and the old stock is rapidly dwindling, leaving the once-awesome bulging shelves of out-of-print material looking a bit barren. We're not really sure what the issue is, but it doesn't seem to be lack of funds, given what we've personally dropped on our regular visits, what friends of ours have dropped, and the constant dwindling stock. We hope things in that arena can be turned around, because we're quickly getting to a day where this fantastic shop ceases to be a driver for a visit to the Portland area as it has been in the past.

UPDATE:

If you were to walk in to Ancient Wonders today, it'd look pretty much just like any other gaming store. They've cleaned things up quite a bit, put down some new flooring, but, ultimately, they've neutered the store. All of the old OOP/used stock has been removed from the sales floor, and is stored in a room upstairs, having been catalogued for sale on Amazon. Unless you're familiar with the place, you wouldn't know that they have any of that stuff, and, if that's what you're looking for, you'd likely walk out without having any clue it's there. As feared, there's now really nothing to distinguish this store from any other, which is a shame.

Located in the warehouse district of SE Portland, Guardian Games is, quite honestly, a pretty epic store. A selection of pretty much everything gaming, a fair amount of used/out-of-print material and a HUGE play space. They've got their liquor license to serve beer/wine, though I don't know if this is just a scheduled-event kind of service, or if it's available on a regular basis. They do have a segregated area in the back for this. There's no decent parking, given the location, so find something on a side street and hoof it in. If we lived in the Portland area (and not the suburbs), then this would likely end up being our regular haunt. Our only real issue with it is that, for all the space they have, and the amount of customers, the merchandise is crammed into a cramped area at the front of the store, and could really benefit from stealing some of the abundance of play space away to make things a little more easily browsable. CONSTANTLY tripping over people, especially when the little kids are running around trying to buy Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

UPDATE:

Guardian Games has moved into a new store just a few blocks away. Located on the corner of MLK and Taylor, the new location is absolutely fantastic. It's much bigger, and the new layout resolves a lot of our issues with the previous setup. Much easier to get assistance from the staff, because now you can actually get to them. They deal in Lego now, both new and open-stock bricks. There's actually dedicated parking for the place, though, given the popularity of the store, parking is very tight. Guardian is probably Portland's (and Oregon's) flagship gaming destination.

What can we say? It's Powell's City of Books - quite possibly/probably the largest bookstore in the world. The place is pretty amazing, but, alas, frequently the prices aren't. It's worth the visit just to see the store, but it's not deal-of-the-century. They've got a fair amount of used RPGs (though, Ancient Wonders is still barely squeaking by as the leader in that respect), and they stock new stuff, which some recent promotion of Pathfinder, which is cool. Go for the experience, but realize that you're going to save FAR more money at almost any other store in the area, not to mention Amazon.

By far, the nicest looking store in the state, what with the purchase of a TON of fixtures thanks to the Border's closures. The store has a way more upscale feel than most of the other competitors, but it's located in a strip-mall in Aloha, so, yeah. All things gaming, but nothing used/OOP. They also have a pretty extensive disc golf selection, if you're into that kind of thing. They carry a fantastic selection of new product, so if you're in the area, by all means, check it out.

Salem's "premiere" gaming store. They stock the major CCGs, a pretty fair amount of RPG stuff, Warhammer 40K, Privateer Press stuff (Warmachine/Hordes), Reaper minis, paints, comics, anime, boutique boardgames and more. They stopped buying/selling used RPG stuff a few years ago, and regularly roll old product out on discount to clear it from the shelves, so not really a place to look for out-of-print stuff, but, overall, it's a pretty good game store.

We could be off-base, but, when we see a listing of store specialties as "Comics, Trades, Games, Action Figures, Collectible Statues, Movie Memorabilia, Costumes and So much more!", we expect there to be a sizable amount of games - after all, you listed it as the 3rd item you specialize in. But, alas, there's far more of everything else on that list than there are games. Games are really an afterthought here. We did get a Star Wars: Revised Core Rules minty-fresh book a couple years ago, but even then, that was almost the only RPG or game product they had. Definitely a lot of fun Star Wars collectibiles and other stuff. We'll visit again soon and update if anything has changed.

Salem, OR 97301
(503) 364-4263

Comments:

A priority on CCGs, but some focus on the "big" RPGs and some other stuff. Not a bad store, but not our first pick. The RPG stuff they have is sun-faded due to the placement in the store near the windows, and it's also kinda behind one of the gaming tables, so if there's someone gaming, you've got to get them to move, and they usually get pissy about it. They still have some older D&D Minis boosters, wihch is neat, but they've jacked the price up on them to be comparable to what you'd pay online.

UPDATE:

Supposedly, Wild Things is moving to a location downtown - the old hipster hangout Clockworks Cafe location at 241 Commercial St NE. We say "supposedly" because this has been being boasted about for quite some time - the better part of a year, if not longer. If this change of location ever occurs, it will be a HUGE boon to this store.

CLOSED: Danger Zone Entertainment confirmed closed, and has directed it's former customers to Wild Things Games.
